Born
in Lliria (Valencia) he began his studies in the school of the Banda Primativa
under José Llopis and later attended the Conservatorio de Valencia. After
finishing studies in harmony, counterpoint and fugue, as well as composition
and orchestration, he became a musical director in the Spanish army in 1946.
From 1965 he was also director of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Valencia until its
demise in the 1980’s. During this time, he directed several spectacular musical
events – including zarzuela operas. He has been invited to direct some of the
most prestigious groups in Valencia, including the Municipal de Alicante, the
Orquesta Municipal de Valencia, the Orquesta ‘Luis Aula’ de Zaragoza and the
Conservatorio de San Sebastián. He has also directed the Municipal de Buenos
Aires in Argentina, and others in the United States, France, Belgium and
Holland. He has always been associated with the Banda Primitiva de Lliria in
Valencia, and was appointed its honorary director in 1956.
He
has written many pieces for bands, pasodobles, military marches, hymns, choral
music, and three pieces for children. In November 2000, the first performance
of his most recent work ‘Música para Banda’ was given in Strasbourg (France). His best known works
include: Esperanza Macarena; Entrada en Jerusalén; Nuestra Sra. de las Nieves;
Virgen del Olvido; Marcha de los Gladiadores; Sones de Triunfo; Triunfa la Paz;
Ole mi morena; Vicente Gerardo; Dos sonrisas; Clarinera Mayor; Plegaria a Sta. Cecilia; Scherzo for orchestra; and Danza de los
Oficios, for a wind quintet. He has also transcripted various works of
Beethoven, Albéniz, Fauré, Schumann, and López-Chavarri for bands. His various
transcriptions for soloists, choirs, and bands include Carl Orff’s Carmina
Burana.
