The band was
founded in 1991 and two years later – under the leadership of the current
director, Víctor Fernández Nogueiras – it added a school of music.
The band has played
widely in Galicia, Portugal, Asturias, Castile and Leon, as well as the Canary
Islands.
More recently, the
band has played in Santiago de Compostela, Cangas, Candeán, Cambados, and
Silleda. Each month, the band gives a concert in its hometown in honour of the
band’s supporters. The band has 70 players – some of whom also play in various
chamber groups. Some 20 junior players form the youth band.
The band has
recently recorded a CD which includes a variety of musical styles; including
pasadobles such as ‘Puenteareas’, ‘Gloria al Trabajo’, ‘Inquietudes
Culturales’, ‘Xacobeo 93’; as well as works such as ‘El Sitio de Zaragoza’ and
‘Rapsodia Gallega n° 1’; and jotas such as ‘Viva Arbo’; as well as hymns such
as the newly written ‘Vila de Arbo’ (1999) by Víctor Fernández Nogueiras.
One of the
highlights of this young band’s history was winning first prize, and an
honourable mention, in the 1999 Valencia International Music Band Contest. It
achieved the highest score in its category, and was the first non-Valencian
band to win an honourable mention.
The band has
achieved a great deal since its recent founding, and intends to achieve much
more in the following years.
