Serafín Martínez Marz was born in Alcublas, near Valencia, and began
studying musical theory and clarinet in his hometown under Joaquín Cabanes.
Later, he went on to study at the Valencia Conservatory with Francisco Idilio
Gimeno. He continued his studies at the Madrid conservatory under Vicente
Peñarocha and won the graduation prize in clarinet. He then studied under José
Tomás – clarinet soloist at the ONE. He also studied harmony with José López
Calvo, and counterpoint and fugue with Calés. He was a founder clarinet-player
with the Orquesta Ciudad de Madrid. He also studied geography and history at
the Universidad Complutense in Madrid. Since 1986, he has been clarinet soloist
at the CG of the FM. He taught clarinet at the Riba-Roja del Turia
Conservatory, and has taken courses in directing, as well as the Kodaly
music-teaching method in Hungary.
