The band was formed in 1973 with the fusion of two established bands in Torrent - the Asociación Musical 'La Clasica' and the 'Patronato de Juventud Obrera'.
With the death of the founder-director, Mariano Puig Yago, in 1978, the baton passed to another musician from Torrente, Enrique Andreu Romero.
In 1981, the band contracted Francisco Idilio Gimeno Martínez as director and under his leadership the band ascended in 1991 from special section B to its current position in special section A - also called the honour section. In 1996, Manuel Enguidanos Cotanda became director.
Since its creation, the band has performed more than 425 concerts and participated in more than 75 musical festivals in Almería, Cuenca, Albacete, Toledo, Murcia, Lugo, and all the Comunidad Valenciana.
Every year the band organises the immensely popular Musical Weeks in honour of the patron saint of music, Saint Cecilia. The band also has a youth band with 50 players.
In April 1990, the band society officially presented its chamber orchestra and this became a symphony orchestra in 1992. In 1995, the society added a chorus - the Coral Polifónica de la Unió Musical of Torrent.
The society has also launched an international course in new and advanced techniques called the 'Mariano Puig' course.
The society's musical school is now officially recognised by the regional government.
