100 years ago, Wind Band Contest 1914
Friday 31 July and Saturday 1 August

As in previous editions, the International Wind Band Contest "City of Valencia" that was held 100 years ago was an international event: one of the guest bands was the Corps de Musique d'Elite of Geneva, Switzerland, which was made up of just over 100 musicians. Its conductor, Captain Zoller, was also a member of the Contest jury, along with the Director of the Valencia Conservatory, Ramón Martínez Carrasco, and the Music Major of the 49th Otumba Regiment of Játiva, Basilio Nieto Vallejo.

As in 1913, the Contest straddled July and August, taking place on 31 July and 1 August 1914 in the traditional setting of the Valencia Bullring.

At approximately three o'clock in the afternoon the participating Bands marched through the main streets of the city, converging on the Bullring. At four o'clock sharp the 8 competing bands and the 2 guest bands, the Corps de Musique d'Elite of Geneva and the Valencia Municipal Band, began the official parade inside the Bullring.

On the first day of the Contest, the three bands in Division Two played the compulsory piece, "Orient et Occident" by Camille Saint-Saëns. Then the five bands in Division One each played their free-choice piece, and the first day was brought to a close by performances from the two guest bands.

On the second and last day of the Contest, the participants marched through the city center to the Bullring where, at about four thirty p.m., the official parade took place. The five bands in Division One played first, performing their compulsory piece, "Carnaval Noruego" by Johan Severin Svendsen. They were followed by the three bands in Division Two which each played their free-choice piece.

When the two guest bands had finished their performances, the winners were announced. In Division One: First Prize and 3,000 pesetas went to the Banda del Patronato Musical de Torrente, conducted by José María Rius Lerma; the First Accessit Prize and 2,000 pesetas was awarded to the Centro Instructivo Unión Musical de Líria, led by their conductor Eduardo Felip Suárez; the Second Accessit Prize and 1,000 pesetas was won by the Lira Saguntina de Sagunto, directed by Antonio Palanca Masiá; and the Third Accessit Prize and 500 pesetas went to the Sociedad Instructiva Musical de Manises, conducted by Enrique García Gozalvo. Also taking part in Division One was the Banda Filarmónica del Centro Vallense de la Vall d'Uixó, conducted by Joaquín Rambla Castelló, which was disqualified by the jury because they performed with musicians who were not members of their association.

In Division Two: First Prize and 2,000 pesetas were awarded the Antella Municipal Band, conducted by José García Pastor; the First Accessit Prize and 1,000 pesetas went to the Banda del Patronato Musical de Pueblo Nuevo del Mar, directed by José Borrero Pérez; and the Second Accessit Prize and 500 pesetas was won by the Banda del Centro Artístico Musical de Paterna, conducted by Vicente Peris Valero.
