BAND HISTORY
The Pozo Estrecho
Artistic Musical Society “Santa Cecilia” officially
came into being in 1893, as a framework within which the great
musical tradition of this town of Campo de Cartegena was united.
After several historical mishaps in the last century the “Santa
Cecilia” Society re-emerged in 1966 with its current structure.
In 1985 the Society was awarded with the Silver Medal of the
City from the Cartagena Town Council in recognition for its
contribution in the spreading of music and culture. In 1993,
coinciding with the Centenary of the entity, the Cartagena Town
Council awarded it with the Gold Medal of the City. In 1998,
it received the ABAL music prize granted by the Association
of Friends of the Fine Arts and Letters of Cartagena. In November
of the same year the band took part for the first time in the
VIII National Competition fro Musical Bands held in Murcia and
won the first prize in the category. On November 11th 1999 the
band performed as a guest band at the IX National Competition
of Musical Bands held in the Romea Theatre in Murcia. On November
28th it performed the “Santa Cecilia Mass” in the
Pozo Estrecho Parish Temple next to the San Martin Coral in
Callosa de Segura, the first time this mass was performed by
a choir and band in Spain, it being composed by Mr. Manuel Seco
de Arpe, a university professor in composition at the Superior
Conservatorium of Music in Murcia. The “Santa Cecilia”
Musical Society frequently attends festivals and has made recordings
with R.N.E. (Spanish National Radio). Every year the band takes
part in Holy Week processions in Cartagena and Cabo de Palos.
It is the band that is responsible for performing the paso dobles
selected to take part in the National Paso Doble Competition
“Villa de Pozo Estrecho”. On February 7th 2003,
the Rural League “Campo de Cartagena Mar Menor”,
awarded it the prize “Favourite Group of the Region”.
