Unión Musical de Valladares (Vigo)

Unión Musical de Valladares (Vigo)

HISTORY OF THE BAND

The Valladares Music Association Band was founded in 1902 by a group of amateur musicians who, little by little, continued to stimulate and renew the group, refusing to let it die out.

Its socio-cultural activities are centered on the Valladares Local Cultural Center. It is here that all the cultural, sporting and public activities of the parish take place. However, some of these activities are organized by independent bodies, such as the Valladares Music Association Band, its autonomy a result of it being the oldest association that operates in the Center.

The musical activity of the Band begins in its Music School which has a staff teaching twelve specialties at Intermediate and Advanced levels. Currently the School has more than a hundred students; the most skilled of them form the Valladares Music School Ensemble, and every year between ten and fifteen new musicians from the School join the Valladares Music Association Band.

Among its members, the Valladares Music Association Band has: professional musicians from its Music School; conductors of other Popular Bands; teachers at the Conservatories of Vigo and Lugo; musicians from Bands such as the Lugo Municipal, that of the Navy Academy of Marin, the Santiago Municipal and the Ourense Municipal; students from the Galicia School for Advanced Music Studies; and students from the Galicia Symphony Orchestra School, among others.

The Band's activities include: an annual concert program dedicated to "Friends of Music"; a concert program organized with Vigo City Council; a concert program commissioned by the Pontevedra Provincial Council; participation in various festivals in the Autonomous Region of Galicia; participation in typical Galician traditional festivities and religious events; and the Band's annual Christmas concert in the Caixanova Theater and Cultural Centre, accompanying the Choirs of the Vigo Royal Nautical Club and the Valladares Local Cultural Center.

This group has recorded five CDs and cassettes.

During the last few years they have taken part numerous band concerts, winning the following prizes:

First Prize in the Galicia Band Contest in 1985
First Prize in the Galicia Band Contest in 1986
First Prize in the Galicia Band Contest in 1991
Second Prize in the Galicia Band Contest in 1996

BIOGRAPHY OF THE CONDUCTOR

JOSE IGLESIAS RAMILO

José Iglesias Ramilo was born, and still lives, in Valladares, Vigo. He comes from a large, very musical family: his father and most of his siblings are members of the band that he conducts.

He began studying music when he was ten years old at the Valladares Music Association Music School. When he was eleven he was already a member of the Band, playing the clarinet under the baton of Alfonso Méndez. It was this teacher who, years later, would propose José Ramilo to succeed him as Band Conductor. Consequently, in 1971, when he was only fourteen years old, he became the Conductor of the Valladares Music Association Band.

He went on to study in the Conservatories of Vigo, Coruña and Madrid. In 1978, through public competition, he gained a post as a Non-Commissioned Music Officer in the Spanish Army, playing the oboe. In1985 he resigned from this post to dedicate himself entirely to directing the Valladares Music Association Band and Music School, and to conducting the Polyphonic Choir of the Valladares Cultural Center. He has also attended courses in Conducting with renowned maestros such as Jan Cover.

The Band's renaissance is attributed to his efforts, and under his leadership it has achieved its greatest successes. In 1996, to celebrate his twenty-fifth year as Conductor, the Valladares Cultural Center and the Valladares Music Association organized an event to pay homage to their Director.

He has composed various musical works.

In 1994 and 1995, the Head of the Department of Culture of Vigo City Council, Francisco Santomé, gave him the task of forming a Symphonic Band with musicians selected from the bands in the region. This ensemble went on to give numerous highly successful concerts and in recognition of his work, the Vigo City Council awarded him the Insignia de Oro.

In 1998, his musical work in Vallares was honored when, at the suggestion of the Mayor of Vigo, Manuel Pèrez Alvarez, the Municipal Corporation of Vigo named him a "Distinguished Citizen of Vigo".
