Unión Musical Santa Cecilia de Enguera (Valencia)

Unión Musical Santa Cecilia de Enguera

HISTORY OF THE BAND

The first musical performances in Enguera date to the 17th century. The first written reference to the town's band dates to 1807: as a result it is believed to be one of the oldest bands in the Autonomous Region of Valencia. Three of the Association's fundamental pillars of the post-war decades were the maestros Joaquín Ventura, Jaime Palomares and Fernando Penella.

In the 1960s the Band's conductors were Angel Taverner, Bernabé Sanchís Sanz and Bernardo Adam Ferrero. For these last two conductors this was the start of their professional careers. During the 1970s and 1980s the Band was led by the much-loved maestro Manuel Vidal Pérez, the maestro who reinvigorated the Music School, helping it to achieve very high student numbers, particularly when the scare resources of the time are taken into account. The School also trained the majority of the professional musicians in the band today. In 1989 maestro Pérez was succeeded by a native of Enguera, Teo Aparicio-Barberán, the maestro with whom the band won their two most important prizes in the provincial contests in 1990 and 1991.

In the following years the work of maestros Juan Fco. Tortosa and Salvador Vidal is worthy of special note. In 2004 Teo Aparacio returned to conduct the band and has held the position ever since. Under his baton the band took part in the W.M.C in 2009 and was judged to be the best Spanish band in its Division.

The Band gives a cycle of twelve concerts every year and also takes part in various local festivals.

It is impossible to overemphasize the important social work that the various Managing Boards of the Association have carried out during all its years.

Currently the Sta. Cecilia Musical Association has almost 400 members and a Music School attended by some 100 students. The current band is made up of 75 musicians, of which almost twenty are professional musicians. The current President of the Association is Julián Aparicio Calatayud.

Banda Xuvenil de Barro

HISTORY OF THE BAND

The Barro Youth Band (BXB) was founded in December 1992 by a group of parents in the Barro Culture and Youth Association. The initial aim of this initiative was to promote a music culture in Barro, but soon the project's scope extended to the entire Galician Region.

The BXB grew swiftly, and in just 15 years it has a stable membership of 60 musicians from Barro and its surrounding areas. In addition to this initiative, the Association also founded a Music School to train the musicians and ensure the musical development of its students, and consequently of the Band.

The success of these initiatives is easy to appreciate when listening to the Barro Youth Band. Further recognition has come in the form of the numerous prizes that the Band has won in various contests over the last few years.

Various conductors have led the Band since its foundation: the first was José Bugallo Senra; he was succeeded by Milagros Valiño, Manuel Martínez, Daniel Portas, José Varela and, currently, Alejandro Cimadevila, who has been in post since December 2008.

The Xira Auditorium project is one of the group's most successful. It involves the Band visiting different concert halls throughout Galicia in order to promote the band and encourage the performance of symphonic works in an environment that is ideal both for their performance and hearing. In the three editions they have completed, the Barro Youth Band have taken their music to concert halls such as the Pazo da Cultura in Pontevedra, and others in Vilagarcía de Arousa, Merza, Lalín, Valga, and Meis, to name a few. During their last tour the average auditorium occupancy was 75%.

Like other popular bands, the Barro Youth Band performs in traditional festivities and religious events all over Galicia. They bring a broad and varied repertoire to these events; this has gained the band recognition in every aspect and all over our country. However, they have also performed in Portugal, so demonstrating the universal nature of music.

The International Clarinets, The Clarinet Choir of the Royal Conservatory of Music, Gent (Bélgica)

The International Clarinets, The Clarinet Choir of the Royal Conservatory of Music

HISTORY OF THE BAND

The clarinetchoir 'The International Clarinets' was founded in 1999 to perform in the Clarinetfest (the Clarinetfestival of the International Clarinet Association) in Oostende/Belgium. Since this first concert, the choir performed together with Eddie Daniels/USA (international jazz star), Larry Combs/USA (principal Chicago Sympony), Robert Spring/USA (prof. Arrizona University), Wenzel Fuchs/Germany (principal Berlin Philharmonic), Howard Klug/USA (prof. Indiana University, Bloomington), Jan Guns/Belgium (bass clarinet Brussels Philharmonic), … Concerts were given in Belgium, Holland and France.

Eddy Vanoosthuyse uses the choir mainly as a pedagogical project, not only is this the best way to learn how to perform together, but it also supports the students if they wish to develop skills wich are needed for a soloist's career. Vanoosthuyse asks Guido Six to arrange a variety of concerti (Weber, Molter, Copland, Finzi, Seiber, …). In this way, he gives his students the chance, under his supervision, to perform in solo concerts. Performing such a concert is also a possibility if students wish to add something extra to their certification examination.

Due to students being involved, the ensembles' member list changes every year, although some former students keep on supporting the group. Throughout the years, students from over 24 countries have been a part of 'The International Clarinets'. Currently, the choir supports 11 nationalities.

The choir contains all the instruments of the large clarinet family: Lab (Ab) clarinet, Mib (Eb) clarinet, Sib (Bb) clarinet, alto clarinet (Eb), bass clarinet (Bb), contra alto clarinet (Eb), contrabass clarinet (Bb).

The entire team of assistants are also members of the Clarinetchoir. In that way, they support Eddy Vanoosthuyse in the best pedagogical way (performing together and working on stage on a better sound and soundprojection). They help also in the organization of concerts and recordings of 'The International Clarinets'.

The International clarinets made CD's with Robert Spring, Wenzel Fuchs, Eddy Vanoosthuyse and Jan Guns as soloists.
