HISTORY OF THE BAND

There have been wind bands in Canals since the early twentieth century. In 1946, thanks to the enthusiasm of various people and the director, a wind band was formed in Canals whose members previously belonged to the Municipal Band.

However, it was in June 1974 when the first statutes of the Band were approved and it became known as the Canals Music Association.

Currently the Association has 550 members and 130 affiliated musicians. Its music school has 17 teachers who give classes to 150 students in the following subjects: sol-fa, choral singing, clarinet, flute, guitar, brass instruments, oboe, percussion, piano, saxophone, violin and cello.

Since 1994 the Association also has a Youth Band in which the school's students being their journey towards joining the Wind Band.

In 1995 our Association formed a choir called "Cor Calixti", in honor of Pope Calixtro III, who was born in La Torreta de Canals. The choir is conducted by Javier Tortosa Carbonell.

Over the years many musicians have performed in our Band who also have noteworthy professional careers in orchestras, conservatories and teaching all over the country.

Recently the Band has been conducted by José Perales Ferre, Juan Ramón Beltrán, Carlos Revert, Fco. José Sánchez Roca and Luís Pedrón Francés. Since 2005 it has been directed by José Martínez Colomina.
