DARÍO
SOTELO: Conductor of the Paulista Symphonic Orchestra. Conductor
of the Brazilian Wind Orchestra. Orchestra and conducting teacher.
Born on February 2nd 1960 in São José de Río
Preto, São Paulo. He graduated as a piano, violin and
viola teacher. In 1983 he became a professor in these instruments
in the Dr. Carlos Campos Drama Musical Conservatorium in Tatuí (SP).
As a teacher he formed the first youth orchestra in 1984. In
1986 he was named coordinator of the String department at the
conservatorium of Tatuí. As String coordinator he created
several orchestral groups and developed great important projects
such as the children’s opera "A Peste e o Intrigante" by
Mario Ficarelli. With the participation of 100 children and
with a technical team of 30 specialists this event was recorded
and exhibited for the Brazilian public and two years later
it became a special children’s programme for "Children’s
Day". Other projects he has led were the "Cantata
de Navidad" by Ernesto Mahle and the ballet "Sueño
de una Noche de Verano" (A Mid Summer Night’s Dream)
by Edson Beltrami. In 1991 he was awarded an important grant
by the "British Council" to carry out his masters
studies in the office of regency at the City University in
London, England. He studied under Ezra Rachlin a disciple of
the great maestro Fritz Reiner. He conducted four concerts
in the participation part of that course, one of them as a
special guest. He regularly performs as a conductor at several
festivals such as the Winter Festival in Campos do Jordão,
and the Curitiba Music Festival. He organises music workshops
in Curitiba (PR) and in Campos de Jordão (SP). In 1998
he travelled to Switzerland to conduct three concerts in the
city of Wattwil, where he presented work by Brazilian composers
and arrangers in an important music festival held there. In
2000 he received a special invitation to visit Budapest (Hungary).
He held several conferences while he was there and workshops
on Brazilian music. He conducted two concerts and made a recording
for the Hungarian state radio. He also presented the works "Symphony
No. 1" by Villani Côrtes and "Portraits of
Brazil" by Hudson Nogueira, both Brazilian composers.
He has conducted and made several recordings on compact disk
with different Brazilian composers and with orchestras such
as the Brazilian Wind Orchestra and the Paulista Symphonic
Orchestra. In 2002 he carried out the General Coordination
of the 1st South American Conference of Composers, Arrangers
and Conductors of Symphonic Bands. With the close cooperation
of Brazilian composers and arrangers such as Hudson Nogueria,
Villani Côrtes, Sergio Vasconcellos Correia, Edson Beltrami,
Mario Ficarelli, Antonio Carlos Neves and others he has performed
a lot of work and world’s first auditions.
