HISTORY OF THE BAND

There have been wind bands in Canals since the early twentieth century. In 1946, thanks to the enthusiasm of various people and its director, a wind band was formed in Canals whose members previously belonged to the Municipal Band.

However, it was in June 1974 when the first statutes of the Band were approved and it became known as the "Asociación Musical Canalense".

The Association currently has 550 members and 130 musicians.

Since 1994 the Association has a Youth Band in which the school's students being their journey towards joining the Wind Band.

Since 1995 it also has a polyphonic choir called "Cor Calixti".

Many musicians have trained in our Association throughout the years and now have successful careers in orchestras and conservatories, teaching all over Spain.

In its more recent history the Band has been conducted by José Perales Ferre, Juan Ramón Beltrán, Carlos Revert, Fco. José Sánchez Roca and Luís Pedrón Francés. Since 2005 it has been conducted by José Martínez Colomina.

The Band's prizes include :

  • National Processional March Contest, Elche 1993. First Prize.
  • Festive Music Contest, Elda 2001. First Prize
  • National Contest, Murcia 2003. First Prize
  • Provincial Contest, Valencia 2006 (Division Two). First Prize and Honorable Mention.
  • Valencia Regional Contest, Cheste 2006 (Division Two). First Prize and Honorable Mention.
  • 2007: Participation in concerts to commemorate 29 April, Valencian Music Day, held in the Valencia Palau de Congresos, the Alicante Teatre Principal, and the Castellón Auditori.
  • Provincial Contest, Valencia 2010 (Division One). First Prize and Honorable Mention.
  • Valencia Regional Contest, Cheste 2010 (Division One). First Prize and Honorable Mention.


BIOGRAPHY OF THE CONDUCTOR

José Martínez Colomina

José Martínez Colomina was born in Alberic (Valencia) in 1973.

He has been the director of the Asociación Musical Canalense (Valencia) since 2005, which he led to First Prize and Honorable Mention in the Valencia Provincial Government Contest in 2006. Later in the same year they won First Prize and Honorable Mention in the provincial finals.

In 2008 he led the Asociación Musical Canalense to win Second Prize in the International Wind Band Contest "City of Valencia". He also attended a band conducting course with Jan Cober.

In 2010 he was appointed principal conductor of the Band of the Federation of Music Societies of the Autonomous Region of Valencia (FSMCV).

In 2010 he travelled to London to conduct the band of the Royal Academy of London where he was awarded the LRSM Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music diploma in Band Direction with distinction.
Just a few days later he led the Asociación Musical Canalense to First Prize and Special Mention in Division One of the Valencia Provincial Contest. The same year he won First Prize and Honorable Mention in Division One of the Valencia Regional Contest. His prize was to conduct the Band in the Palau de les Arts on Valencia Regional Music Day.

In 2012 he was awarded the LRSM Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music diploma in Orchestra Direction with distinction. His orchestra teacher was Juan Luis Martínez.

Today he teaches band direction at the Asociación Musical Canalense in Canals and at the Manises Sociedad Musical.

In February this year he conducted the Symphonic Orchestra of the city of Adana (Turkey) with great success.
